I enjoyed reading this blog. You hit on something that most overlook; the importance of the mind.

By the tone of that paragraph, it is possible you've already read the book I'm about to suggest. But if you haven't check out a classic, "Think and Grow Rich". It was published in 1937, ahead of its time then and in many ways today.

So refreshing to see someone advocate sensible eating HABITS and exercise in balance. No mystery here, but no huge profits either by selling tons of junk. The biggest problem is everyone wants instant results. I look at it as: you didn't add the weight (100lbs or more!) in a couple of months, what makes you think it will magically disappear in a week!

I have always modified my habits to control my weight, NOT restricted my foods. Diet is just DIE with a T for terminal added.

So nice to read something sensible and that I have adhered to for years. Sensible eating, NOT DIETING, exercise. All about balance The biggest thing we (not you and I of course, more like the royal we) want is instant results no matter what. I always maintain, it took you 5 years to add the 100 lbs, what makes you think you can take it off in 1 month!
When I did start to add the pounds, I nipped it in the bud. CHANGED my EATING habits, not the foods. Friends didn't believe it could be that easily done. A few followed my suggestions and succeeded. Others binged dieted and failed.

Alcohol and I have never gotten along very well, so I just stay away from it. The times I do indulge it is, however, with red wine.

More red wine = more health. At least that's what I tell myself in the evenings. It works for the Sardinians.

Best,

Great point Erin. I've discussed the importance of short-term goals elsewhere. There's nothing quite like a target date to get you motivated.

All excellent points, and such a relief to read a sensible approach in the new year frenzy.
I'd add to the goals point, to choose a very specific time bound goal. A date where you can say "By X I am going to squat x/bench x, run a 5K in x time, lose x pounds of scale weight and/or x inches from my waist, step onstage for a figure show, etc. That tends to be the kick in the arse we all can use from time to time when we see the calendar clicking down. Short term goals within the context of the overall goal help as well.
